THE FOUR TYPES OF HARMONY IN MUSIC

 


4 Types Of Interval Movement Creates Harmony

1. Parallel Harmony
Both voices (notes) move in the same direction and the same interval.

Example:
Both voices move up 1 whole step.

 

2. Similar Harmony
Both voices move in the same direction but in different intervals.

Example:
1 voice moves up 1 whole step and the other voice moves up 1 and 1/2 steps.

 

3. Contrary Harmony
Both voices move in opposite directions.

Example:
1 voice moves up any interval and the other voice moves down any interval.

 

4. Oblique Harmony
1 voice holds and the other voice moves.

Example:
1 voice holds and the other voice moves up or down any interval.
